Dal Tadka / Paruppu Kadaiyal

Today  I have come with a simple dal recipe . This is a traditional recipe and quite usual dish in every household in Tamilnadu . I love this dal with potato chips fry . This goes well with hot steamed rice topped with a tsp of ghee. I am sure even the aroma makes us droll . And this is a daily preparation in houses with kids . My mum will not add any spice to it , just the cooked dal with ghee. I liked that version very much . But hubby dear love this tadka dal , so I stick to this preparation . This is so simple and gets ready in minutes . Lets see how to prepare this simple dal…

Paruppu Kadayal / Dal tadka

Ingredients

Toor dal / Thuvaram paruppu – 200gms

Turmeric powder / Manjal thool – 1/2 tsp

Garlic  - 1 clove , crushed

Cumin seeds / Jeeragam – 1/4 tsp

Sesame oil – few drops (optional )

Onion – 1/2 chopped

Green chilli – 1 chopped

Dry red chilli – 3

Mustard seeds / Kadugu – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal / Uluntham paruppu  - 1/2 tsp

Asafoetida – a pinch

Curry leaves – a spring

Oil / Ghee – 1 tbsp

Salt to taste

Preparation

Wash the dal nicely. Take a pressure cooker and add the dal with  turmeric powder , crushed garlic , cumin seeds and few drops of sesame oil with enough water and pressure cook it for 4-5 whistles or till done.Grab all your ingredients.

Heat oil or ghee in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds and urad dal, followed by red chillies , asafoetida and curry leaves . Then add the chopped onion and green chilli and fry for few mins or till slight brown and switch off the flame .

Add this tadka to the dal with required salt and mix well  . If you find the dal thick then add some boiling water to adjust the consistency.

Serve this simple dal with steamed rice and potato fry.

Notes :

  • You can also add a tomato to the dal while pressure cooking . Or while frying onion , add the tomato and fry till mushy then add it to the dal.
  • Adjust the spiciness up to your taste.
